Manglik dosha (also called Kuja dosha or Mangal dosha) is one of the most discussed points in Indian kundli matching. Many families worry when a horoscope is called "Manglik", but the rule is more nuanced than it sounds, and classical texts list several conditions that cancel it.

What is Manglik dosha?

A person is traditionally called Manglik when Mars (Mangal) occupies the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the birth chart; many traditions also include the 2nd house. The houses are counted from the Lagna (ascendant), and many astrologers also check them from the Moon and from Venus. Mars is a fiery planet, and in these houses it is believed to affect temperament, domestic harmony and the marriage house (the 7th) through its placement or aspect.

How to check if you are Manglik

1. Make your free kundli with the exact date, time and place of birth.
2. Find the house number in which Mars sits in the Lagna chart.
3. If it is 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12, the chart shows Manglik placement — now check the cancellations below.

Classical cancellations (Manglik dosha parihar)

• Both partners are Manglik — the most widely accepted cancellation in matching.
• Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn).
• Mars aspected or joined by Jupiter, or strongly influenced by benefics.
• Specific sign–house combinations mentioned in different texts (for example Mars in the 2nd in Gemini or Virgo, or in the 4th in Aries or Scorpio).
• Strong 7th house and 7th lord, and a supportive Navamsa (D-9).

Because of these rules, a large share of charts that look Manglik at first glance turn out to have a cancelled or mild dosha after a full reading.

Common myths

• "Manglik dosha ends at 28." This is a popular belief, not a rule from the main classical texts. We do not rely on it.
• "A Manglik must never marry a non-Manglik." Not true when cancellations apply; the whole chart decides.
• "Manglik dosha causes misfortune." It describes a tendency that is read with the rest of the chart. Fear-based advice is not helpful.

Remedies people traditionally follow
